What Happens if the Weather is Bad on My Rental Day?

Worried about weather ruining your Kelowna boat rental? Learn about Lake Day Boat Rentals' weather policy, cancellation options, and how we handle bad weather days on Okanagan Lake.

What Happens if the Weather is Bad on My Rental Day?

Weather is the one thing nobody can control — and it's a fair concern when you're planning a boat rental. Here's exactly how we handle weather at Lake Day Boat Rentals.

The Good News About Kelowna Weather

Kelowna is one of the sunniest cities in Canada, averaging over 2,000 hours of sunshine per year. The Okanagan Valley's semi-arid climate means that truly bad weather days during boating season (April 15 – October 31) are relatively rare.

That said, weather can be unpredictable, and we want you to know exactly where you stand.

Our Weather Policy

If We Cancel Due to Unsafe Conditions

Safety is our absolute priority. If conditions on Okanagan Lake are unsafe for boating on your rental day — including severe thunderstorms, high winds, or other hazardous conditions — we will contact you as early as possible to:

  • Reschedule your rental to another date at no additional charge
  • Issue a full credit toward a future rental
  • Provide a full refund if rescheduling isn't possible

We make this call based on Environment Canada forecasts and real-time lake conditions. We never send guests out in unsafe conditions.

If You Cancel Due to Weather Concerns

If you're uncomfortable with the forecast and want to cancel or reschedule, our standard cancellation policy applies:

  • 48+ hours before your rental: Full refund
  • 24–48 hours before: 50% refund
  • Less than 24 hours: No refund

We understand that weather can be a legitimate concern. If you're on the fence, we recommend calling us — we can often give you a better picture of what conditions will actually be like.

What "Bad Weather" Actually Looks Like on Okanagan Lake

Not all weather is created equal. Here's a practical guide:

Conditions That Are Fine for Boating

  • Partly cloudy skies
  • Light wind (under 20 km/h)
  • Overcast but dry conditions
  • Light rain (the boats have some shelter)

Conditions We Monitor Closely

  • Wind speeds 20–40 km/h (creates chop, still manageable for experienced operators)
  • Isolated thunderstorm risk
  • Smoke from wildfires (visibility and air quality concern)

Conditions That Ground the Fleet

  • Thunderstorms or lightning in the area
  • Wind speeds over 40 km/h
  • Severe weather warnings from Environment Canada
  • Visibility below safe operating levels

Tips for Weather-Proofing Your Rental Day

  • Check the forecast the week before — Okanagan weather is fairly predictable 5–7 days out
  • Book a morning rental — afternoons are more prone to wind and afternoon thunderstorms
  • Have a flexible schedule — if you're visiting Kelowna for multiple days, having flexibility in your itinerary makes it easier to reschedule
  • Bring layers — even on sunny days, it can be cool on the water, especially in the morning
  • Call us if you're unsure — we'd rather talk you through the forecast than have you cancel unnecessarily
  • What About Smoke?

BC wildfire season can occasionally bring smoky conditions to Kelowna in late July and August. Smoke doesn't necessarily make boating unsafe, but it can reduce visibility and air quality. We'll communicate smoke conditions to you before your rental and let you decide how to proceed.

    The Bottom Line

In most cases, weather concerns are manageable and your rental will go ahead as planned. Kelowna's summer weather is genuinely excellent, and the vast majority of our rentals happen without any weather issues.

If something does come up, we'll work with you to find a solution. Our goal is for you to have a great experience — rain or shine.
