If you're a dog owner planning a trip to Kelowna, you've probably already thought about whether your four-legged crew member can join the adventure. It's a great question — and one we get asked regularly.

At Lake Day Boat Rentals, we welcome well-behaved dogs on our rental boats, subject to a few conditions. We know how important it is to include your pet in family adventures, and Okanagan Lake is a spectacular place for dogs.

Tips for a Great Day on the Water with Your Dog

Before You Go

• •Practice on calm water first if your dog has never been on a boat. Some dogs love it immediately; others need time to adjust.
• •Bring fresh water and a bowl — dogs get thirsty in the sun, and lake water isn't ideal for drinking.
• •Apply dog-safe sunscreen to exposed areas (nose, ears, belly) if your dog has light-colored fur.
• •Bring a towel — your dog will likely get wet.

On the Boat

• •Keep your dog leashed or under close supervision at all times, especially near the swim platform.
• •Create a comfortable spot for your dog — a familiar blanket or bed can help them feel secure.
• •Watch for overheating — dogs can overheat quickly on a boat in the sun. Make sure they have shade and water access.
• •Let them swim — most dogs love swimming in Okanagan Lake. The water is clean and the lake is beautiful.

Coming Back

• •Rinse your dog off after swimming — lake water can irritate skin with prolonged exposure.
• •Check for ticks — while not common in the lake area, it's good practice after any outdoor adventure.

Dogs and Okanagan Lake

Okanagan Lake is a wonderful environment for dogs. The water is clean, the shores have sandy areas for playing, and the lake is large enough that your dog can swim to their heart's content.

One thing to be aware of: blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can occasionally appear in Okanagan Lake during hot weather. This is toxic to dogs. We monitor conditions and will alert you to any advisories. When in doubt, keep your dog out of areas with visible algae bloom.
